I do think the ending is happy but, of course, the journey there has been somewhat painful for Aragorn and Faramir both. If we accept that there is life beyond death – and in Tolkien’s universe there certainly is – then neither existence will be easy; there will be a time of waiting and of loneliness for the one who stays behind and for s/he who passes on. Ultimately, however, there is reunion and there is great joy in that, to be sure.

It might be in appropriate to comment on so ancient a gem and I hope it won´t make you feel uncomfortable. I just stumbled across this and found myself unable to resist its beauty (to be exact it was Eora who lured me there). The pace is so measured, the words so gentle, and in the end I was glad about a happy end that would not be considered as one.

I also love the way the story is told; like a legend or a tale passed from mouth to ear by the camp fire. A tale that makes me feel sad and yet it is soothing in its tender loving finality. And now I think I´ll have to go and get myself a hankie… (sob)
